Armillary for the Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre, Kuwait.

 

Originally built by Richard Glynn in 1720 and housed in the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford, Solve3D was commissioned to first measure the original, then create a 3D data set. We prepared engineering drawings from measurements and photographs, together with a full set of graphics. We then constructed the armillary using a combination of traditional craft skills, foundry casting, CXNC and manual machining. Mostly Built from naval brass, steel, bronze and glass. Ivory coloured acrylic replaced, real ivory as used in the18th century. The most challenging task, after building such a precise work of art, was to distress and age each component to give a historical look. The outer planets (of the known outer planets of the solar system) are missing as they were not discovered until later in the 18th century. For us, the piece was a real labour of love!

- Measuring 600mm diameter & standing 1000mm high, this piece now stands in the stunning ‘Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre in Kuwait’.
