Model Making - Concepts in card.

I’m often asked if rapid prototyping technologies such as 3d printing have significantly impacted my business.

Certainly, they have taken away a significant chunk of the small ‘Quick & Dirty’ test prototypes that used to form around 20% of our work. The technical skills of the traditional model maker however are broad and the ability to find solutions to every challenge come with the territory.

Large scale, concept mock-ups are one such area, and our work in transport design is a thriving example. At a time where we are seeing major changes in how we think about transport for the 21st century and beyond, there is a great deal of work, not only developing new power and control systems but also passenger comfort.

Solve 3D is one of only a handful of UK companies at the forefront of model making for transport design, supporting consultancies in the development of concepts from these volumetric sketch models, through to pre-production prototypes. These sketch models are often created in the design studio by the designers themselves, but often they can look a little ‘rushed’ for client presentation. In addition, clients want to sit in the space to demonstrate the various states of recline so a stronger mateial such as MDF is required to create the seating elements. When clad with foam and placed in the enclosure it is much easier to make practical , informed decisions.

In our experience, the best design starts with those early concepts, transforming sketches and rudimentary drawings into 3D as quickly as possible. Card, foam and MDF volumetric models allow rapid, early evaluation of ergonomics, volume and basic form. These models help to inform and make accurate assumptions which are then taken forward to the next stage of development. Models such as this card concept  for a business class suite are a fast and effective way to understand the relationship between passenger comfort and available space.

Carefully constructed, a card model can offer a surprising level of durability and strength.

Of course it is important to remember that model makers with many years of experience in the design industry tend to have a greater understanding of the goals, and empathy with the designer and design intent. Often, detailed preparation and endless explanations are not required. Misunderstandings tend to be fewer in number.
